Ike Legget Approved 17.5 % Pay Increase for County Council

Rockville -   Last week, the state of Maryland lowered state tax revenue projections for this year and next by a combined $405 million. The revision comes despite the continuous tax hikes that Montgomery County residents have been subjected to – over the last eight years, taxes have been raised 40 times by Governor O'malley and the democrat controlled legislature. The crippling taxes Montgomery County residents face have done nothing to benefit the greater community and solely benefit the nine county council members and County Executive Ike Leggett.

As everyday citizens struggle with a sluggish economy and lagging job growth, the county council and County Executive will receive a handsome pay raise after November's elections. Council members will enjoy a 17.5% pay increase, raising their yearly compensation to $125,000 while the County Executive will see a 3% bump, bringing total pay to $190,000. This excessive, self-gratifying raise leaves Montgomery County residents with a higher tax bill and no tangible benefits.

Tax revenue is dwindling, children throughout the county attend class in trailers rather than proper classrooms, taxpayers see regular raises in property taxes and energy rates, yet the current County Executive will see comfort and benefit in a pay raise. Jim Shalleck will reverse this trend, restore economic priorities in the county, and invest in the future for all residents. End this fiscal irresponsibility and vote fiscal sanity into Montgomery County.

Jim Shalleck calls to  reopen the Great Seneca Science Corridor Master Plan for review

Gaithersburg - We must reconsider the Great Seneca Science Corridor Master Plan before the county raises taxes again and spends millions of your dollars! Under the Great Seneca Science Corridor Master Plan Master Plan, Ike Leggett has pushed and received approval to build over 20 million square feet of development, which is equivalent in size to four Pentagons in an area that is about 1.5 square miles.  The primary area in question is the Belward Farm property at the intersection of Darnestown Road and Muddy Branch Road.   In order to allow this higher density the community designation was changed from ‘suburban’ to ‘urban’ and the requirement to build a new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system was added.  Several studies have shown BRT systems will not obtain the ridership needed to support the planned density resulting in continuous taxpayer funding and actually increasing the vehicular traffic.  Ike Leggett has even proposed creating special tax districts to fund this project raising all homeowner taxes several hundred dollars a year. As County Executive, I will reopen the Great Seneca Science Corridor Master Plan for review and ensure all voices are heard not just special interests and large developers.

Cost of the Paul Sarbanes Silver Spring Transit Center Balloons to $120 million

Silver Spring - The cost of the Paul Sarbanes Silver Spring Transit Center has now ballooned to $120 million, yet eight years after its groundbreaking ceremony, it's still not even ready to support the weight of a bus. Where is the accountability for this disastrous project that is now years behind schedule and millions of dollars over budget? County Executive Ike Leggett, County Council President Craig Rice, and General Services Director David Dise need to answer questions about their mismanagement of this fiasco. Mr. Rice should immediately call for hearings on the transit center, while Montgomery County States Attorney John McCarthy at the local level and the United States Attorney's office District of Maryland, Rod J. Rosenstein at the federal level need to examine how the contract was awarded, and how it was executed.
